Meta ran advertisements that contained AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery, according to a Wired report and the company’s own ad library data. The material appeared not as ordinary user posts but as paid ads distributed through Meta’s advertising systems.
The report says more than 50 offending image and video ads were published across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or Threads. Some of those ads ran as recently as this week, indicating that the problem persisted up to the time of reporting.
The incident raises urgent questions about the effectiveness of Meta’s ad-review and safety systems, especially as generative AI makes harmful synthetic media easier to produce and circulate at scale. It also highlights how transparency tools such as Meta’s ad library can expose failures in the company’s own enforcement pipeline.
