Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC) has broken into the world's top three NAND flash memory suppliers by volume for the first time, a milestone in China's push to build a competitive domestic semiconductor industry.
The Wuhan-based chipmaker captured 14 per cent of global NAND bit shipments in the second quarter, narrowly overtaking Japan's Kioxia. Bit shipments measure total storage capacity shipped rather than the number of chip units, making the metric a gauge of scale in the memory market.
The achievement comes as China strives to narrow the revenue gap with global rivals in high-value data-centre storage, a segment long dominated by American, South Korean and Japanese firms. YMTC's rise marks the first time a Chinese chipmaker has reached the top tier of the global NAND supplier rankings.
