San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has confirmed that his Tesla's Autopilot was engaged when he was involved in an accident near downtown Palo Alto roughly four weeks ago. The disclosure adds a new detail to an incident the coach had previously addressed only in broad terms.
At the time of the crash, Shanahan said only that the accident was his fault. During a more recent press conference, however, he opened up about the circumstances, including the fact that his Tesla's Autopilot had been engaged.
The shift from a brief, fault-accepting statement to a fuller account is likely to draw renewed attention to how high-profile drivers use—and disclose their use of—semi-automated driving systems in real-world collisions.
